Ceramic tiles have a very rich history and cultural significance. History of ceramic tile making differs from every country and culture. Generally, ceramic tiles are pieces that can provide instant designer boost to any surface. It is very durable because of its composition and the way it was made. Ceramic tiles are excellent design inspirations in any space. They are mostly situated in areas that are constantly wet such as in bathrooms and kitchens. They are very advisable for areas with high traffic demands.
Unglazed tiles do not have luster. It does not possess sheen. They are made by firing a clay only once (glazed tiles are fired twice). Unglazed tiles possess minimal range of colors which range from brown to muddy earth color. The bisque is the state of clay tile after it was fired once.
Glazed tiles are bisques fired twice which contributes to its sheen and luster. Glazed tiles can come off in many colors because it is relatively easier to add pigments. We often see glazed ceramic tiles on residential and commercial spaces where a high requirement for aesthetics is needed. It is easier to design using glazed tiles since there are numerous colors and varieties of it available in the market.
Mosaic tiles are small pieces of glazed tiles that are mainly used for decorative purposes. They can be purchased in 6 x 6 shapes. Mosaic tiles are mostly glass tiles although some of the modern varieties are already ceramics. Glass mosaic tiles are more impressive since they possess translucency that makes the light pass through the tile.
Carved tiles are done by placing the clay in a wooden block mold. The clay is then baked under the preferred temperature, fired, added pigments and prepared to dry. Carved tiles have impressions on them which is sometimes hand painted.
No matter what kind of tile your home possess it is important to exercise cautions and proper cleaning and maintenance in order to preserve it in its normal state all the time.
